Fifflaren, son parcours

After the 2007 edition of the Lan79, the team started to undergo pressure as the CGS approached. One of the rules stipulated that to take part in the competition, players had to have reached the age of majority. This was an obstacle for promising young players, no matter how skilled they were. The young Ferus was a victim of this rule. The trio composed of Fifflaren, majk and haunted secretly organised a new project with players who were still playing for Dignitas at that time. HaZ and Ferus were then put on the bench, CheckSix was finished.

Fifflaren unveiled his new team “Adastra 3.0”, that was made of three players who had played for its previous version: nordQvist, majk and haunted. Olander filled the last slot of this roster that would soon accomplish remarkable things. There was clearly potential in this team and, unsurprisingly, the new-ex-Adastra players won the right to participate in the Combine EU of the CGS scheduled for the end of the summer.

In the meantime, the european teams are invited to the “The eXperience 2007”, the biggest danish lan. Few days before the event, the Adastra joined NoA. At this time, the news makes a lot of noise considering the reputation of this organisation on 1.6. It’s under this legendary tag that Fifflaren, ranked 3rd best player in Europe by Cadred.org, and his man start this tournament which will end up being a big disappointment.

Defeated by the surprising team Roskilde eSport (FeTiSh, 3k2, jiMMy, kev1n, Haahr) in the semi-final of the winner bracket, the Swedes completely fall apart against the future winners from Fnatic in the lower bracket. They end on a disappointing top 5/6 while people expected them to reach the podium, at least.

CGS 2007

A bad omen only one month before the final step for CGS 2007 qualifications. It is THE event not to be missed. If the event itself only has tens of thousands of dollars of prize pool, the most important about this event is to catch the eye of different franchises managers. NoA will have a pretty hard time there. Their defeat right at the beginning against EYEballers will send them in the lower bracket right away. In the end, Fifflaren’s men will end on the third position behind EYEballers (Vizzion, Sparkle, Haz, Nightman, Red) and Fnatic (AirRaid, Blaze, darky, xertion, ylSs).

If the winner of the tournament from EYEballers are logically recruited by HeatoN in Stockholm Magnetik, it’s Berlin Allianz, managed by bESEL, old member from a 1.6 NoA team, which will create the surprise and disappoint a lot of people. Everybody was waiting for the Fnatic team to be picked, as they were very good all season long and ended second of the Combine EU, but bESEL prefered to chose Fifflaren’s men.

This choice felt wrong and had a pretty bad impact on the Berlin Allianz popularity. Regarding the new players of the organisation, it was a real professional gamer contract that was waiting for them. Five years before Ninjas in Pyjamas and CS:GO, Fifflaren finally plays Counter-Strike full time with an enjoyable salary and the world finals in sight at the end of the year.

While in their gaming house, the Berlin Allianz team will literally shut themselves off from the rest of the world and practice hidden. They won’t take part in any online and offline tournament until the world finals of CGS 2007 with 500.000$ of cash prize.

It’s two and a half months later, in the middle of december, that the world prepares itself to observe one of the best event ever organised in the history of esport. After winning their placement match, Berlin Allianz are directly qualified for the quarterfinals where they’ll play the modest mexicans from Mexico Furia (secretagent, spyder, viko, aladar, Alex). The victory is easy and the qualification for the semifinal in their pocket. This round becomes clearly more difficult, maybe too difficult. Facing the Carolina Core (DAFF, devour, masternook, elusive, SonNy), they lose the match 07-11. The game between the two teams ends on a 21-22 for the Americans, and this very little gap between the two scores probably upset the Swedes for a while.

Anyway, ending top 3/4 at the world finals means a jackpot of 70 000$. A nice earning to comfort Fifflaren and his teammates, already looking forward to the launching of the season two of a very generous competition toward its actors.

CGS 2008

The second season of the CGS wasn’t long to come. The European qualifiers appeared as soon as May 2008. The Combine EU were also back, but this time the collective selection was replaced with an individual one. Each player had to try and distinguish themselves individually.

There was only one change in Berlin Allianz’s roster during the mid season, since haunted had decided to leave the team. It was a bad tournament overall for the team, for they lost to the British Guns4hire team during the quarter-finals. Besides, the bESEL manager only secured one player from the Source team : Olander. This decision contrasted with the choices of the three other formations, who secured three players from their CS:S teams. The decision of the bESEL manager clearly showed his will to radically modify his CS:S roster.

And he indeed wanted to change the team’s composition. To do so, he gave Fifflaren and his friend majk a green light to recruit new players. The last two players to be selected were two Fnatic, Blaze and Xertion. The best European team, Fnatic, was dismissed and the new version of Berlin Allianz was born.

Xertion and Fifflaren, an improbable but disappointing combination

Again, the  team didn’t score any top place in a side event, the continental finales arrived quickly and soon it was time for intense preparation. Unlike during the previous year, only three out of the four European structures were allowed to take part in the world finales. In this race for slots, Berlin Allianz was firstly opposed to their rivals from Stockholm Magnetik (Red, Sparkle, HaZ, REAL, ferus). Despite their defeat with a score of 08 to 10, the beSEL players managed to scrape through, 21 to 20.

The next match was against Birmingham Salvo (RattlesnK, pT, Mangiacapra, Wez, wilZOO) Fifflaren’s men will undergo a terrible defeat with 06 to 12, a large gap that will be determining in the final score of the match, that the British team will win 22 to 21. Nevertheless, the bigger part of the work is done for Berlin Allianz, who qualify for the world finales a couple days later in Los Angeles. A qualifying phase passed without any victory from the CS:S team.

At the world finals, Fifflaren and his swedish and dutch teammates are against Sydney Underground, the australian team (Huk, spunj, Topgun, Boomser, Tegs). And it’s again a defeat for the CS:S team to a 09-10 scoreline. A result that has been catch up on other disciplines and Berlin Allianz manage to pass the first turn. But the punishment will happen in the semi-finals against dreadfuls San Francisco Optix (Warmach1ne, Clown, moE, grt, Paradox), dominating on every games and obviously on CS:S. The americans crushes Berlin Allianz 12-06 on CS:S and 27-14 at the general leaderboard and goes to the grand final.

Unlike the previous event, Berlin Allianz are stopped at the doorstep of the grand final. The CS:S team led by Fifflaren has truly not shined by not winning a single official match in this second season of CGS. Yet, players wins for a second time a nice prize of 70.000$.

In november 2008, an unexpected news happened : there will be no third season of Championship Gaming Series. Too expensive and unprofitable, DirectTV stop the expenses. All employees, players and managers are left aside and needs to get back to a regular life.

It is certainly the hardest hit in Fifflaren’s career, which one brutally stops, but the swedish leader has not said his last words, he will come back six months later with the will of showing to the world that Sweden is the country of Counter-Strike. A difficult task.
